Weekend Reads v. 23.8.2024

This weekend I’m headed to Cleveland for the first time to attend a wedding. Somehow, I’m finding the city’s most impressive attraction to be the house from A Christmas Story. (!!) Who could have ever predicted the movie that was a low-budget fluke would turn into the massive thing it is today? What are your plans for the weekend?
From gimmick to lifesaving to party drug, here’s an article about how laughing gas changed the world.
“We’re not dating. We’re not seeing each other. We’re just talking.” More and more people aren’t getting past the pre-dating stage to start actually, well, dating.
Once upon a time, cilantro (aka coriander) was a staple of Italian cooking. A fifth-century Roman cookbook proves Italians were once in love with this herb.
Vivian Maier’s story has captured my attention since I first heard about a box of her film negatives being discovered at an auction in 2007. Maier took candid snapshots of people on the sidewalks of New York City and Chicago from the 1950’s to late 1990’s. She was fiercely private, estranged from family, and excelled in her job as a nanny. I was reminded of her this week because some of her work is currently on display in New York City.
I invite you to fall into a delightful rabbit hole and view her work here. She apparently did a wonderful job of blending into the background; her images are gloriously candid and preserve emotion. After moving through her body of work you feel as though you are getting to know quite a lot of personal detail about the people in the photos. If you’re looking for a way to procrastinate at work, this is it!
A list of where to find cheese made locally.
What is wrong with me that I found this video of how The Internet cannot identify the 6th celebrity in this patterned fabric ABSOLUTELY RIVETING?!
These montages of people attending concerts make for a perfect game of Can You Guess Which Concert are so accurate. The Oasis one cracked me up.
I’m seeing more and more glimpses of trends to come, and it all feels like a remix of things from the past. It appears decorative mats for picture frames are back. These would be fun in a small bathroom.
Take gentle care of yourself!
